The carrier describes itself as “committed to building a diverse pipeline of future aviation professionals,” with its award-winning Aviation STEM Summer Camp, run in partnership with the CR Smith Museum, being a prime example.
American Airlines’ Aviation STEM Summer Camp
The Aviation STEM Summer Camp is specially designed for students in third to tenth grade to get hands-on experience with STEM in the aviation industry. The program focuses on two core principles – experiential learning and career exploration.

A series of interactive workshops held by fully-trained camp staff and American Airlines’ flight instructors help attendees to build critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills. Meanwhile, through field trips and talks with current employees, the youngsters gain exposure to the different career opportunities available in aviation, from pilots and flight attendants to engineers and graphic designers.
The camp, which is just one of several initiatives sponsored by American Airlines in the Dallas area, has won several awards in recent years. In 2022, it was crowned “Best in DFW – Gold” for summer camps in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Earlier this summer, the oneworld member airline sponsored 56 students of all backgrounds from Clinton P. Russell Elementary to attend one of its fully funded Aviation STEM Summer Camps. The school is located in Dallas, Texas – the home of American Airlines’ largest hub at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). The school’s Principal, Chara Pace, shared their excitement at the opportunity, saying,
“The camp provided our students with invaluable exposure to aviation. It was truly the experience of a lifetime, opening doors and kindling dreams that will shape their futures. Our students returned with a clear vision of their potential future in the aviation industry by exploring careers from aircraft mechanics and engineers to pilots and flight attendants.”
Although the prices for next year’s camp have not been announced, this year’s camp costs $375 for the five-day experience. Sponsorship may be available, and eligible members of American Airlines’ loyalty program, AAdvantage, are also eligible for discounted rates and early registration.

This summer’s camp has already taken place, but enrollment for the summer 2025 camp will open in March next year, with more information available on the American Airlines CR Smith Museum’s website.
