The airline will resume the service connecting Da Nang and Tokyo beginning in late March.
Vietnam’s national airline, Vietnam Airlines, will soon begin service on a popular Vietnam-to-Japan route. The airline is beginning service from Da Nang International Airport (DAD) to Haneda International Airport in Tokyo, Japan (HND).
The Da Nang to Tokyo route
The Da Nang to Tokyo route will begin service on March 26th, 2023, and will offer four different flights per week. The city of Da Nang is currently serviced by 24 different direct routes. Of these 24 routes, 16 are international. The Da Nang International Airport typically averages just over 100 flights per week.

This service is part of the agreement between Vietnam Airlines and the city of Da Nang, which is considered a promotion and cooperation agreement from 2023 to 2027. This cooperation agreement between Vietnam Airlines and the city of Da Nang was signed at a signing ceremony back on March 3. The agreement stemmed from a similar 5-year agreement that ranged from 2018-2022.
Deputy Chairwoman of the city’s People’s Committee, Ngo Thi Kim Yen, said that the city and the airline were both agreeing to promote investment, trade, tourism, and destinations from this agreement. There was a focus on making a full economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kim Yen continued, saying that the agreement would boost tourism in the city of Da Nang. The partnership with Vietnam Airlines would help with bringing new tourists to the city. Da Nang had nearly 3.7 million tourists in 2022, and Vietnam Airlines will look to help boost this number in 2023.
Da Nang is a central beach city in Vietnam and has various tourism opportunities, ranging from hikes on the Golden Bridge to private tours across the city. In 2023, the city will also be hosting the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival, the ASEAN Students Sports Games, and the Asia Films Festival, all of which will assist in boosting tourism.
The cooperation agreement also assists Vietnam Airlines. The city of Da Nang has agreed to promote both the national flag carrier’s international routes and domestic routes at the city’s tourism and cultural events.
Vietnam Airlines Deputy General Director Trinh Ngoc Thành agreed that Vietnam Airlines has been making an effort towards expanding tourism in Da Nang. Vietnam Airlines operates seven of the eight available domestic flights out of the Da Nang International Airport. The airline has also resumed two other international flights routed from Da Nang. The destinations of these two flights are Bangkok, Thailand, and Incheon, South Korea.
Vietnam Airlines continues resuming operations
In addition to the Tokyo to Da Nang route opening in March, Vietnam Airlines has worked towards opening several other direct routes across the continent. All in all, Vietnam Airlines has recovered nearly 60% of its flights since the COVID-19 pandemic that paused many routes, some for over two years.

Vietnam Airlines recently announced four flights per week would resume service from Hanoi to Kuala Lumpur. This route had been suspended for nearly three years. Before the end of 2022, Vietnam Airlines also resumed routes from Hanoi to Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The airline also began flying regular flights to China at the end of last year. The routes to China are to many of the country’s largest airports, including Shenzen, Hangzhou, Shangai, and Nanjing, among others. In addition to opening up regular flights to China, Vietnam Airlines will resume chartered flights between Da Nang and China by mid-April.
